Atlantis

Project overview

Around 2018, while serving as Tech Lead / Technical Operations Manager at Atlantis City B.V., I led the technical development of a critical Virtual Reality (VR) demonstration for the ambitious Atlantis platform concept. Atlantis envisioned a comprehensive VR metaverse focused on business interactions – encompassing immersive networking, AI-powered assistance (‘Lexi’), virtual e-commerce, company presentations, investment opportunities, and secure communication potentially leveraging blockchain. Built using Unreal Engine 4, the guided VR tour I developed was the primary tool used to showcase this forward-thinking vision to potential investors and secure crucial funding.

The Challenge

The primary challenge was to distill the vast, multi-faceted vision of the Atlantis platform – a next-generation digital ecosystem for business – into a concise, impactful, and technically impressive VR demonstration. This POC needed to effectively communicate complex ideas like AI-driven matchmaking, immersive e-commerce, and virtual corporate presence to investors, using the VR technology available in 2018. Key hurdles included designing a representative virtual environment, programming a compelling guided experience, ensuring high-quality visuals and performance on contemporary VR hardware (likely HTC Vive), and achieving this under significant time pressure (“built with a really short deadline”).

My Role

As Tech Lead / Technical Operations Manager at Atlantis City B.V., I was central to bringing the Atlantis vision to life for investor presentations through the development of the core VR demo. My responsibilities encompassed:

  • Leading the technical strategy and hands-on development of the VR demonstration using Unreal Engine 4.
  • Programming key interactive elements and the guided tour logic using Blueprints and C++.
  • Overseeing and contributing to the creation, integration, and optimization of 3D assets and environments specific to the VR demo.
  • Translating abstract concepts (like the AI assistant ‘Lexi’, virtual business spaces, interactive product showcases) into tangible visual and interactive components within the VR experience.
  • Ensuring the demo provided a stable, high-performance, and comfortable VR experience optimized for the target hardware HTC Vive.
  • Managing the technical workflow and potentially a small team to deliver the polished VR demo within a very tight timeframe for crucial presentations.

The Solution

I developed a guided VR tour designed to give investors a compelling glimpse into the potential of the Atlantis platform:

  • Immersive VR Showcase (Unreal Engine 4): Created specific virtual environments within UE4 that represented key aspects of the proposed Atlantis world – potentially including futuristic communal hubs, examples of customizable private spaces, or mock-ups of virtual storefronts or presentation areas.
  • Guided Narrative Experience: Designed a structured path or guided interaction sequence within the VR demo to effectively communicate the platform’s core value propositions in a limited time.
  • Visualizing Key Concepts: The demo included visual representations of:
    • AI Assistant ‘Lexi’: Through UI elements, voice-over prompts, or even a simple avatar guiding the user.
    • Immersive Business Presence: Showcasing how a company could build a virtual showroom, presentation space, or interactive exhibit within Atlantis.
    • Networking & Communication: Hinting at the potential for virtual meetings and interactions within shared spaces.
    • E-commerce Potential: Demonstrating how a 3D product could be examined or customized in VR.
  • Polished Investor-Ready Demo: Focused on delivering a high level of visual fidelity, smooth performance, and intuitive interaction (within the guided structure) to make a strong, professional impression crucial for fundraising.

Results / Outcome

The VR demonstration served as a vital tool in Atlantis City B.V.’s strategy to communicate its complex and ambitious vision to the investment community. Key results:

  • Successfully created a tangible, immersive experience that brought the abstract concepts of the Atlantis business metaverse platform to life.
  • Provided a powerful and engaging medium for investor pitches, far more impactful than traditional presentations or documents alone.
  • Effectively showcased the potential of VR for future business applications (networking, e-commerce, presentations) using cutting-edge (for 2018) technology.
  • Demonstrated strong technical leadership and rapid development capabilities in Unreal Engine 4 and VR development under pressure.
  • The demo fulfilled its purpose as a strategic visionary piece and was well-received during crucial presentations.
