Project overview
KeyKeg commissioned the creation of high-fidelity, photorealistic 3D renders for their innovative line of beverage kegs (10L, 20L, and 30L sizes). Utilizing industry-standard tools like 3ds Max and potentially leveraging Unreal Engine for rendering, I produced a series of accurate digital visualizations. The project focused on delivering realistic representations of the products in different states (with empty and full inner bags) under precise studio lighting conditions, suitable for various marketing and technical applications.
The Challenge
The primary goal was to create versatile, high-quality digital assets that accurately represented KeyKeg’s physical products, eliminating the need for repeated photoshoots. Key challenges included:
- Achieving a high degree of photorealism in the 3D models and materials, especially the distinct look of the plastic keg shell and the inner bag in both its empty (collapsed) and full (expanded) states.
- Accurately modeling the three different product sizes (10L, 20L, 30L) based on reference materials.
- Setting up a consistent virtual studio lighting environment as per client specifications (neutral background, specific shadow casting) across all product variations.
- Rendering the products from a specific front-view angle with the logo perfectly centered.
- Delivering high-resolution images with transparent backgrounds for easy integration into various media.
- Managing the workflow efficiently, starting with an approval render (20L empty bag) before producing the full set.
My Role
As the 3D Artist and Renderer for this project, I was responsible for creating the entire suite of photorealistic 3D product renders for KeyKeg. My duties included:
- Creating accurate, detailed 3D models of the 10L, 20L, and 30L KeyKegs based off photos deliverd.
- Developing and applying highly realistic materials and textures to mimic the real-world product appearance.
- Setting up the virtual studio lighting environment precisely according to the client’s requirements.
- Rendering each of the three product sizes in both specified states: ’empty inner bag’ and ‘full inner bag’.
- Utilizing 3ds Max for modeling, setup, and leveraging Unreal Engine for its advanced real-time rendering capabilities.
- Ensuring all final renders met the required specifications for view angle, resolution, and transparency.

The Solution
I delivered a comprehensive set of high-quality 3D renders meeting KeyKeg’s specific needs:
- Accurate & Detailed 3D Models: Produced precise digital replicas of the 10L, 20L, and 30L KeyKeg products.
- Photorealistic Materials: Developed custom materials that accurately simulated the look and feel of the keg’s plastic components and the unique texture/translucency of the inner bag, both when empty and full.
- Controlled Studio Environment: Created a virtual lighting setup that generated clean, professional visuals with specified soft shadows on a neutral/transparent background.
- Comprehensive Product Variants: Delivered renders for all three sizes, each clearly showing the difference between the empty inner bag state (as per physical samples) and the full inner bag state (as per reference photos).
- High-Fidelity Rendering Techniques: Employed advanced rendering methods using Unreal Engine to achieve exceptional realism and detail in the final images.
- Standardized Output: All renders were delivered in high-resolution format (e.g., PNG) with transparent backgrounds, adhering to the specified front-view camera angle for consistency.
- Separated Components: Additionally, renders of separated key components were provided for technical illustrations or exploded views.

Results / Outcome
This project provided KeyKeg with a valuable library of high-quality, consistent, and photorealistic 3D renders of their core product line. Key results:
- Delivered versatile digital assets suitable for high-resolution use in marketing campaigns, websites, product catalogues, and potentially technical documentation.
- Successfully visualized the different product sizes and critical internal states (empty/full bag) with high accuracy and realism.
- Eliminated the need for costly and time-consuming physical photoshoots for these standard product views.
- Demonstrated strong capabilities in professional 3D product visualization, including modeling, texturing, lighting, and advanced rendering techniques using tools like 3ds Max and Unreal Engine.
