Project overview
Vantage Flight is a dedicated mobile application built for the vibrant kite-surfing community, commissioned by Vantage. Developed entirely using Flutter for cross-platform compatibility (iOS & Android) and powered by Firebase, the app allows users to meticulously log their kite-surfing sessions – including unique data like jump height and duration – share their experiences, connect with fellow surfers via chat and profiles, discover session spots on a map, and engage with Vantage products. The platform was built with a strong emphasis on intuitive design, community building, and adherence to data protection regulations (GDPR).
The Challenge
Vantage aimed to foster a dedicated digital community for kite-surfers. The challenge was to create a mobile app that went beyond generic social platforms, offering specialized features valuable to kite-surfers, such as detailed session logging with specific metrics (jump height, duration). It needed robust social features (profiles, chat, sharing), location-based mapping of sessions, seamless integration of Vantage product information, and a secure, private login system – all packaged in an engaging, easy-to-use interface compliant with GDPR.
My Role
As the sole developer for the Vantage Flight mobile app, I was responsible for bringing the concept to life, implementing the provided designs, and building the complete application from the ground up. My responsibilities included:
- Developing the cross-platform application using Flutter and Dart.
- Architecting and implementing the Firebase backend, including Authentication (custom login), Database Firestore, and Google Analytics integration.
- Building all core features: detailed session logging forms, user profile management, real-time chat, interactive map view, social sharing capabilities, and Vantage product display.
- Ensuring the application adhered strictly to data protection principles (GDPR).
- Focusing on creating a high-quality, performant, and secure application following mobile development best practices and clean coding standards.
The Solution
I developed a feature-rich Flutter application tailored specifically for the kite-surfing community:
- Cross-Platform Performance (Flutter): Delivered a native-like experience on both iOS and Android using a single Flutter codebase for efficiency and consistency.
- Detailed Session Logging: Created functionality for users to easily log their kite-surfing sessions, upload photos, and importantly, record specific metrics like jump height and session duration via a custom session form.
- Secure User Management: Implemented a custom authentication system (as required, not reliant on external social logins) and user profiles with editing capabilities.
- Engaging Community Features: Enabled users to find and connect with others, engage in private chat conversations, and share their logged sessions easily to other social media platforms.
- Interactive Session Map: Integrated a map feature providing a visual overview of where users are logging sessions, helping discover spots and connect locally.
- Brand Integration: Included a dedicated section for users to browse or select relevant Vantage products.
- Robust Firebase Backend: Leveraged Firebase for secure user authentication, scalable real-time database storage for sessions and user data, and integrated Google Analytics for valuable usage insights.
- Privacy Compliant: Built with GDPR requirements in mind, ensuring user data was handled securely and transparently.
Results / Outcome
The Vantage Flight app successfully provided a dedicated digital home for the kite-surfing community, meeting all core requirements set by Vantage.
